Mast Climbing Work Platforms

For building facade work such as bricklaying, window installation or coating, mast climbing work platforms offer a safe and efficient vertical access solution to save time on construction sites. They can carry workers and materials to different levels on a building in a single journey, increasing productivity and decreasing the number of trips up and down.

Mast climbers are motorised platforms which can either be anchored on structures or be free-standing. Like traditional scaffolding, they can be used for new-build construction and repairs, maintenance, facilities management and even recladding. But unlike anchored scaffolding, they can travel up and down vertical masts to reach different heights quickly and safely.

Exploring the Benefits of Mast Climbing Work Platforms

Unlike traditional scaffolding, which has to be moved around the site for each stage of the project, the mobile mast climbing work platform can be driven to the base of the structure and loaded with materials straight from a skid steer loader or a telescopic handler. This makes heavy lifting easier and reduces the risk of shoulder and back injuries. The platform can also be adjusted to suit each work task.

While a mast climber can be a cost-efficient alternative to anchored scaffolding, engineers say its safety risks remain unclear. Mast climbers are susceptible to instability when carrying loads, especially when the mast sections and platform decks are overloaded. If structural deficiencies are identified in load-carrying members such as the mast sections and/or the platform decks, the equipment should be removed from service until these issues are addressed.
